Autumn Programme

September – October 2022

The new junior tennis term runs until October half-term.

We follow the LTA Youth programme which provides lots of skill-based activity and a rich learning environment for children of all stages of development.

LTA Youth is divided into five stages; Blue, Red, Orange, Green, and Yellow, each with its own court size and type of ball.

Find out about Holiday activity and Competition by scrolling down this page.

Blue (4 – 6 yrs)

Blue stage is for children aged 4 to 6-years-old and enables them to learn the basics and how to enjoy the game through a series of fun activities based on the fundamental areas of balance, coordination, agility, movement and racket and ball skills.

Red (6 – 8 yrs)

Players focus on developing their ABC’s (agility, balance and coordination) whilst learning and developing rallying, serving, moving and volleying skills. Players will gain all the tools they need to receive and send the ball. Our aim is to have players rallying, scoring and playing fun competition as soon as they’re ready. Slower balls and smaller courts make this possible!

Orange (8 – 9 yrs)

A great way for players to continue their progress from Red stage.  Players will focus on building on the fundamentals acquired in Red and developing an all round game, the court grows in size a little bit so we want their game to grow too! We plan to get players developing different shots, technique and tactics – ready to move to the full court game!

Green (9 - 10 yrs)

The best way for players to continue progress from Orange stage. Players focus on building their technical and tactical knowledge, along with learning doubles tactics for great teamwork. Our aim is to get players ready to move to the full sized court whilst improving all aspects of their game.

Yellow (10+ yrs)

At the yellow stage children are playing on the full size court with pro balls. Exploring different game styles, improving physical capacities and developing well-rounded motor skills are all par for the course.

Juniors FAQ

What kit do we need?

We’ve got plenty of rackets for players to borrow.
We encourage players to bring a bottle of water.
Sun cream and visor if it’s sunny.

When is my child ready to move to the next mini stage?

A child’s age usually determines when they’re ready to move. Equally we don’t mind if they stay a little less or longer in a stage – as long as their enjoying and learning. At the end of each term you’ll receive a group progress report to keep you up to date with how they’re doing. We’ll inform you when your child is ready to move and recommend the next class.

Can I speak with the coach?

Absolutely. We save 5 minutes at the end of the lesson so we can catch up with parents.

How many children in a session?

Our coach player ratio is 1:8. There may be more than 8 in a class, however the coach to player ratio will remain the same.

How about competition?

Competition is important and we incorporate competition and games throughout the term. The last session of term always includes a fun competition. We’ll provide plenty of information mid-term on how to enter external competitions.

How do I get involved as a parent?

There are lots of ways to get involved, everything from arranging fun competition, helping out on court, completing a coach qualification or just generally volunteering. Don’t forget to find out about our family play sessions too!
