Opening the courts to more people
One of the biggest barriers to sport is often access – knowing where to go, how to begin, and whether a session will feel right for you. That is why creating friendly, affordable and welcoming opportunities remains such an important part of the summer programme across Bexley and Greenwich.
In Bexley, players can get involved through Barclays Free Parks Tennis at Danson Park and West Heath Recreation Ground, along with adult coaching, junior sessions, and the Bexley Tennis Pass for affordable year-round access.
In Greenwich, the summer offer includes junior coaching, holiday camps, adult sessions, and Social Tennis Night at Eltham Park South, helping more adults and families find a way into the game that suits them.
Junior tennis, holiday camps and active summer days
For children and families, summer is a brilliant time to get active on court. Our junior coaching programme helps children build coordination, rallying skills, confidence and enjoyment of the game in a supportive coaching environment.
Our Summer Holiday Camps add even more energy to the season, blending tennis, games, team challenges and competitions into active days that help children stay engaged, make friends and enjoy learning in a positive setting.
If your child has been inspired by Wimbledon or is ready to try something new this summer, coaching sessions, camps and taster opportunities are all great ways to begin. Find junior coaching and holiday camp bookings here.
Adult coaching, social tennis and getting back on court
For adults, tennis can be a great way to stay active, improve fitness, enjoy more time outdoors and build a routine that feels both healthy and social.
Across Bexley and Greenwich, adult sessions include options for beginners, improvers and intermediate players, alongside offers such as Tennis Xpress, Cardio Tennis, and Social Tennis. Whether the goal is improving technique, getting fitter, meeting people or simply playing more often, there is a session to match.

Coaches Spotlight
This month, we’re putting the spotlight on Coach Gabrielle and Coach Greg Payne, two coaches who bring energy, encouragement and a strong sense of purpose to their sessions across our venues. In their July interviews, both reflect on the wider value of tennis – not just as a sport, but as something that supports physical health, mental sharpness, confidence and enjoyment over time. Their insights offer a useful reminder that tennis can be social, rewarding and genuinely good for wellbeing at every stage of the journey.
Coach Gabrielle
Coach Gabrielle shares a thoughtful perspective on how tennis can support both health and happiness, while helping players feel more confident and connected on court.
If tennis was a “superpower” for health, what would you say it does best – boosts your heart, clears your mind, or just makes you happier?
It can reconnect with your inner self, making us think forward to the next move and shot. Playing tennis makes me feel happy, win or lose a point or a game, and I am sure that this has a positive overall impact on my body as well!
Tennis is often called “chess on the move” – how do you think it helps players stay sharp both physically and mentally?
A little bit of everything. Even if I never played to get fitter, it can be done. If I have been hitting, pleasantly exhausted like after a training session; if it has been a while since I last played less stressed and refreshed.
In your opinion, why is tennis such a great sport for long-term health – what keeps people coming back year after year?
Physically, it has been proved by scientific studies that the game boosts the anaerobic fitness component of players of any stage and level, mentally, because it’s the top sport for sportsmanship and gamesmanship that can translate to other fields of life as well
In your opinion, why is tennis such a great sport for long-term health – what keeps people coming back year after year?
You can play tennis alone, v buddies and opponents making your own set of rules! Letting the ball bounce twice or allowing x numbers of serves, the versatility of tennis is a key factor for retention and why this is such an inclusive sport open for everyone on the long run
What’s your favourite “feel-good” moment in a session where you can actually see the health benefits kicking in for your players?

Coach Greg Payne
Coach Greg Payne brings a warm and encouraging coaching style, and his interview highlights why tennis can be such an effective way to build fitness, focus and long-term enjoyment.
If tennis was a “superpower” for health, what would you say it does best – boosts your heart, clears your mind, or just makes you happier?
Greg’s view is that tennis stands out because it can do all three. It offers a strong physical workout, gives people a mental reset, and creates a sense of enjoyment that often lifts mood as much as movement lifts fitness.
Tennis is often called “chess on the move” – how do you think it helps players stay sharp both physically and mentally?
Every point involves quick thinking as well as quick movement. Players are judging space, timing shots, adapting to what is in front of them and staying present throughout. That blend of mental focus and physical effort is a big part of what keeps tennis engaging.
In your opinion, why is tennis such a great sport for long-term health – what keeps people coming back year after year?
Tennis offers variety, challenge and social connection, which makes it easier for people to stick with. Players come back because they feel the benefits, enjoy the process and can keep developing over time, whatever their age or stage.
What’s your favourite “feel-good” moment in a session where you can actually see the health benefits kicking in for your players?
One of the best moments is seeing a player grow in confidence during a session – when they move with more purpose, connect better with others on court, and finish feeling happier, more motivated and prouder of what they have done.
What the coaches remind us about summer tennis
Both interviews highlight something important about tennis: it supports far more than just technique. It can help people get fitter, think more clearly, feel more confident and enjoy a stronger sense of routine and connection.
That matters in summer, when families and adults are often looking for activities that feel healthy, social and realistic to keep up. Whether it is a child joining a holiday camp, an adult trying a beginner session, or a family heading to a free park tennis event, tennis offers a way to stay active that can feel both enjoyable and sustainable. Tips to help you ace your summer tennis
Start with the right session
The right starting point makes a big difference. For some, that will be a junior taster session or holiday camp. For others, it may be adult beginner coaching, Cardio Tennis, Social Tennis, or Free Parks Tennis. Starting where you feel comfortable helps confidence build naturally.
Play regularly, even if it is only once a week
Consistency matters more than intensity. One good session each week can build rhythm, confidence and motivation much more effectively than waiting for the perfect time to play.
Focus on how tennis makes you feel
Progress is important, but enjoyment is what keeps people coming back. Feeling more energised, more focused, more social or simply happier after playing is a real part of tennis success.
Use what is local and accessible
With opportunities across Bexley and Greenwich, it is easier to keep tennis going when sessions are close to home and easy to join. Free sessions, affordable passes and structured coaching all help make that possible. Explore local tennis opportunities here
